So, the image of character will mostly be formed in your head, but we have custom scenarios for that already In Planetfall you could customize apperance and you got to eventually play all races and classes, which was enough imo. It's like buying a book where half the pages including the description of main character are empty, and you can fill them for yourself "as a bonus".Ĭustom characters are often generic and boring and lack distinctive personality for obvious reasons(Hogwarts Legacy-recent example), unless it's a well-crafted RPG, which AoW surely isn't. Originally posted by Balekai: The bonus in AoW4 is that we get to play our own custom characters rather than mostly pre-built ones. There's no evidence of such a campaign save system in AoW4, so this could easily be the issue with the story realms and why they're not truly a campaign akin to AoW3 or PF. If we played our cards right with the Core, Empress or Independent decisions throughout, we could start the mission with them all allied with us based on our final allegiance decision. We didn't have to play all the faction missions to get to the final one, but if you played all missions you could have fully geared NPC factions for the last mission. We started PF always with the Vanguard guy tutorial, then could pick different paths on that campaign save or continue playing Vanguard guy for another Vanguard mission. So unlike Planetfall, I don't see how there can be a way to "save" or continue progress from one story realm to another, unless they bring back Planetfall's campaign save system. (More on that later, but there's some new basic story realm info in the newest Victory Condition dev diary that supports the former story features still being there). Some NPCs would show up or not in future missions based off your decisions. We basically had simple overarching primary mission objectives, that could be achieved different ways by doing some side quests. ![]() I can't remember if AoW campaign maps were partially procedurally generated or not, but Planetfall's definitely were and also had loosely connected events between missions. I see that as "Planetfall campaign style, with more dynamic city/hero quests, fewer missions in total, less direct connections between story realms." ![]() Originally posted by Heron:I mean, the first reviews are out and support what has been communicated all along: the campaign takes a step back in favour of procedural story events. Instead, they feel more like occasional textual interludes that provide a short break before diving back into the game’s systems, which benefited from the majority of our attention." Unfortunately, these do repeat after a while and don’t contribute a ton to the emergent story you weave as you march towards your chosen victory condition. They can tap into your culture and afinities, adding a bit of RPG flair to the proceedings. These narrative events do, however, add more flavor to regular skirmish realms. Sadly, they don’t scratch that itch for a fully-fledged story campaign. Its five-story realms do have some handcrafted events that attempt to tell separate tales, all thinly linked by a common thread. "Age of Wonders 4 moves away from a traditional campaign, favoring procedurally-generated levels and narrative events that come up as you play. I mean, the first reviews are out and support what has been communicated all along: the campaign takes a step back in favour of procedural story events. Similar to Planetfall's Empire mode feeling like a continuation of Star Kings DLC into perpetuity.Īnyone buying this for the story really should wait in my opinion and see what's there first. The idea also seems to be more narrative support and immersive scenario maps that feel like a campaign. I'm guessing the first story realm will only allow Champion start though for story reasons (I hope i'm wrong). ![]() The bonus in AoW4 is that we get to play our own custom characters rather than mostly pre-built ones. You only had to do a few maps to get to the last mission, but there were bonuses or penalties in the last mission if you played and geared all factions. There will be less campaign maps overall than Planetfall, which was about 11 (2 per race?) + 1 end mission at launch. We will see if there's cinematic, narrative or briefing starts with voice acting etc. Basically the same thing and I enjoyed the campaign in Planetfall more. The narrative focus shifts to randomly generated maps instead, where the storytelling is much more extensive than in previous titles.Ĭampaign as it was in Planetfall? No. Story realms (several semi random maps with a predetermined story) serve as a substitute but I don't think they will come close to a full campaign.
